Using Quiet Time with iPad/iPhone
09/07/2011 ~ 13 comments

One of the most frequent questions we get is "Do you have an app for that?"  In fact, we do have a mobile web app for the Online Quiet Time in development and hope to see it released some time this fall.  It will be usable by any iOS device (iPhone, iTouch, iPad, etc) but also Android and Windows devices.  We'll keep you up to date when it gets released.

In the mean time, many people (myself included) use devices like the iPad to access their Quiet Time from the web browser.  I most often do my Quiet Time by visiting the Quiet Time website from Safari on my iPad.  It works quite well.

One question we receive very often though is about the scrollbars.  Many think there is a bug in the website which makes the scrollbars vanish.  However, this is something Apple put into their iOS browsers on purpose.  In order to make more of the site viewable on a small screen, they remove the unsightly scrollbars.  They've built in a simple gesture which allows you to scroll.  Simply use two fingers to scroll up and down and you should be back in business.

For more info on the scroll bars, click here. And check it out in the iPad manual here --- it's on page 48.

I have been looking for an application like this for several years. The online quiet time diary is fantastic.

I don't know if you know this or not but with the recent release of iOS 5 you no longer need to use 2 fingers to scroll. It works with just one now.

Is there a place where I can see the upcoming passages? Like how in the paper copy you can look ahead to see what books of the Bible we will study...how can I see that info online?

Mandy, that is a great question. Right now we don't have a place to show the upcoming schedule, but we do keep a list of ideas and suggestions and we'll put that on the list, thanks for the input.

How is that mobile version coming?

The mobile site is under way right now. Developers are working on it as we speak and we expect to see it for the first time mid January. As has been the normal process, we'll probably make changes and adjustments, work thru all the little details and be ready for a public launch sometime in April or May. The current site works great on the iPad. We have made some tweeks along the way to make the iPad experience really great. I do my QT on the iPad about 90% of the time. But the smart phone experience is what we are after in the mobile site.

Good stuff. I enjoy doing it on the iPad as well. Most of my students don't get on the computer, everything is on their phone. Excited to see it happen!

I do my quiet time on the Amazon Kindle Fire using their web application, but the two finger approach is not working for the scroll bar situation. Any tips on how to solve this issue?

The 2 finger approach doesn't work on my Kindle Fire, either. I have to use my online Bible, and print hard copies of the commentary from Quiet Time Away, and basically just use my Kindle for my responses. Not quite user-friendly yet.

The Android tablets (including the Fire) are a real pain to scroll on. This is where the iPad have it all over the Android tablets. But we are working on a new version of the QT that will work really well on these devices along with smart phones. We hope to see the first beta version of this next week.

Still having struggles with the scrolling on my Kindle Fire. Has the beta fix been released yet? If so, how can I get on board? Love portability w/the Kindle, but unhappy about not being able to use my OQT. Thanks for all you are doing!!
